Normally at this time of year, YWES hosts a bioblitz to encourage families and local nature enthusiasts to come together to find all the living things in a small area of Yorkson Watershed one evening.
Of course, nothing is normal this year.
So, we have adapted and gone virtual! This year, our bioblitz is set up as an iNaturalist project, running for two weeks, from June 1-14. Participants can take photos and upload them to iNaturalist, a free app that identifies and catalogues plants, animals and fungi. Or tag your photos on social media using #YorksonBioblitz. We have been able to involve other watershed groups to make this a Langley-wide event.
Local environmental reporter, Dave Clements writes about it in the Langley Advance Times:
There is another way to participate, without the use of a smart phone or even photos. Simply create a list of the species you find and email them to LEPS at stewardship@leps.bc.ca.
Have fun seeking local wildlife and celebrate Canadian Environment Week (June 1-7) and Rivers to Oceans week (June 8-14)!
